“There’s No Place Like Home”
But what is it that makes a house a home?
That is the question that we have set out to answer through our Shoebox House challenge!
We're inviting people of all ages to create their own shoebox house and fill it with the objects, amenities and comforts that make a house feel like a home. We want you to think about the things that help you feel safe, comfortable and able to switch off and relax.
This challenge encourages you to reflect on the everyday things we often take for granted, this could be your favourite chair or a treasured photograph to a warm drink or a space where you can simply be yourself.
People with lived experience of staying in temporary accommodation have shared that a real home is about so much more than four walls and a front door. A home is a place of comfort, security, belonging and stability. It is somewhere we can rest, recharge and feel truly ourselves. Through this challenge, we hope to encourage everyone to think more deeply about what "home" really means and the small but important things that help make it feel that way.
All completed shoebox houses will be displayed as part of a special art exhibition during Homelessness Awareness Week, showcasing the creativity and imagination of our participants.
The challenge is open to all ages. An information pack will be provided to help you design and build your shoebox house. Participants aged 18 and over can sign up themselves. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian will need to complete the registration on your behalf.
We can't wait to see your creations and celebrate the importance of having a place to call home. Join us, get creative, and help support Path's work with people experiencing homelessness.
Submissions must be in by the 30th September 2026.
